4. Supervisor Information:
Name: Michael Huie
Information: This is Mike's first year as the Whitecaps head groundskeeper. Mike was the graduate intern for the Whitecaps the previous year and was offered the head groundskeeper position after the former head groundskeeper left for another team. Mike also interned with the Albuquerque Isotopes. Mike Huie is from Walla Walla, Washington and he attended Walla Walla Community College where he earned his degree in turf management.
5. General Hours:
We were expected to work almost everyday. We usually worked from 10am-5pm during non-game days. On game days we usually came in at 9am and stayed until after the game was over. We were usually home by 11pm or midnight. But our hours varied by game start times, weather, and other various factors.
6. Main Duties:
The main duties of the grounds crew is to make the field playable. The tasks we performed varied depending on if we had a game or not. On non-game days we usually: re-sloped the bullpens and game mound and plate, leveled first and second base and home plate, mowed, and did general upkeep. The day before the start of a home stand we would: paint the logos, foul line, and coaches boxes, rake and drag the infield and warning track, mow the infield and outfield, and water everything. On game days we would: rake and drag the infield and warning track, sometimes we would mow, set up and tear down batting practice, and then prepare the field for the game.
7. Compensation:
$700 stipend per month (base)+$100 a month for previous experience, free housing at York Creek apartments, free food at the ballpark, we got apparel at cost instead of retail which was usually around 50% off, free golf passes, and a free YMCA pass.
8. Specific Goals I want to achieve:
I want to be able to prepare any baseball field for play.
I want to broaden my grounds keeping and maintenance experience.
I want to learn more about turf. Like the various diseases and chemicals needed to keep it healthy.
I want to learn about budgeting for the department.
9. Expected learning outcomes:
I expect to learn about all of the above mentioned topics.
